Yale medical students love YSM but dont love everything about their Yale education, and Yale faculty love Yale students, but also worry about their Yale education. That was the starting premise of the Deans Committee on Medical Education, which has been meeting weekly for the past year. The committee currently has charge of the schools continual reexamination of the methods and practices of medical education at Yale. An hour and a half every Tuesday is a big commitment, but Ralph Horwitz, M.D., chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, is only one of the eleven faculty members, administrators, and students who put in that time to develop a set of recommendations on renewing the Yale System. The committee has proposed such measures as further integration among the basic science courses, and of the basic sciences taught in the first two years with the clinical sciences that are the focus of the third and fourth years. It has reaffirmed the schools graduate-school model of education, in which students are considered mature adults, strongly motivated to learn, requiring guidance and stimulation rather than compulsion or competition. Yale medical students take responsibility for more than their own individual programs. Student representatives are voting members of the Committee on Educational Policy and Curriculum. The committee uses students evaluations of courses in its planning. Students have also taken the initiative to create courses and lecture series in such areas as international health, nutrition, medicine in society, and Spanish for health professionals. As a result, Yale medical students really do love YSM. |
