Women's HealthThe Womens' Behavioral Health Research DivisionCarolyn M. Mazure, Ph.D. Professor of Psychiatry Department of Psychiatry 200 College Street, Suite 208 203-764-6600 The Department of Psychiatry has a distinguished history of research contributions that are directly pertinent to understanding the etiology, pathophysiology, course, treatment, and prevention of psychiatric and substance abuse disorders suffered by women or of high prevalence in women. At this time, the Department of Psychiatry is poised to enhance its research effort in these areas through the newly organized Women's Behavioral Health Research Division. The overall goal of the Division is to examine the neurobiological and psychosocial underpinnings of psychiatric disorders more comprehensively than ever before, develop newer generation, innovative treatments, and combine these efforts with the essential components of prevention and outcomes research. The Department of Psychiatry's Women's Behavioral Health Division is a coordinated program developed to respond to the need for scientific investigations that will fill the gaps in knowledge related to the health and health care of women. In particular, the Women's Behavioral Health Division strives to understand more about the conditions that manifest differently in women than men and that often require different interventions. Research is aimed at the understanding of the disorders that are unique to women, the cause and treatment of conditions that are more prevalent in women, and a need to address disease-producing behaviors that are becoming more common in women. Most importantly, the Women's Behavioral Health Division seeks to incorporate the study of the effects of sex and gender into the mainstream of scientific research.
