Ph.D., 1995, Hofstra University

Academic Interests:

Our team’s overarching research goal is to improve substance abuse treatment outcomes for 2 particular groups of patients, 1) those with co-occurring disorders (e.g., comorbid psychiatric & substance use disorders or dual-dependence) and 2) substance abusing patients in settings that do not traditionally focus on substance abuse (e.g., Primary Care, Emergency Departments, OB/Gyn). To that end, we focus our efforts on refining our understanding of treatment motivation, specifically with regard to (a) the assessment of motivation for change, (b) the development, testing, and dissemination of a variety of motivational interventions (e.g., motivational interviewing and contingency management), and (c) use of these methodologies to both predict and improve treatment (particularly, medication) adherence.

In addition, the lab is active in developing genetic and molecular tools that facilitate our efforts to better understand the molecular and cellular basis of neural plasticity and animal behavior. For example, our laboratory has pioneered the use of viral-mediated RNAi to create gene knockdowns in the brain. We will continue to develop powerful new techniques to better connect genes, neural anatomy and animal behavior.
