Adopt-A-Doc

The Adopt-A-Doc Program places pediatric residents in the homes of their
patients and out into the community. While home visits are no longer common for
doctors, home visits for Yale Pediatric interns and site visits of second year
residents to local community based organizations allow them to see children as
more complete human beings by expanding each resident's knowledge of the
child's living environment, culture, family dynamics, and stresses. The goal is
to improve health care for children living in and around New Haven, Connecticut,
especially those who are new immigrants and those living in poverty. Residents
and interns are assigned to a particular neighborhood, where they make home
visits to children within that neighborhood while accompanied by a nurse
practitioner or outreach workers from The Family Support Team from The Child
Study Center. Visits may involve newborns, patients with asthma, or patients
with other medical problems. The goal of the home visits and the site visits is
to help the pediatrician-in-training have greater understanding of the social,
cultural, and family factors that affect the health and well being of children
and which may influence the racial and ethnic disparities in health outcomes.
