The Yale Section of Maternal-Fetal Medicine has been responsible for many innovations in Obstetrics. Among the areas that were initiated or pioneered at Yale are:
- Targeted ultrasound
- Fetal monitoring
- Fetal echocardiography
- First Fetal Cardiovascular Center in USA
- Fetal transfusions and surgery
- Doppler prediction of fetal anemia
- Urine and Serum biochemical screening for Down syndrome
- Prediction of prematurity
- Diagnosis and treatment of thrombophilia
- Amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling
- First trimester nuchal translucency and serum analyte screening
- First Newborn Special Care Unit in the USA
The Section is comprised of a team of physicians, nurses, and sonographers with extensive clinical experience and diverse research interests. For the residents this provides resources ranging from mentoring clinical or bench research projects to gaining clinical skills in prenatal ultrasound.
Divisional activities take place in several areas. Inpatient activities are concentrated on Labor & Birth, down the hall from our offices, and in the Maternal Special Care Unit. Morning rounds are attended by all available attendings and fellows to ensure active discussion and enhance resident education. Outpatient activities are split between an office suite near L&B and a new office located about a mile from the main hospital campus. Both outpatient areas are staffed by attendings and fellows, and both feature state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment and comfortable examination rooms.
All of the faculty and fellows are committed to resident education, both in didactic sessions and at the bedside.
