THE PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE IN THE HOME
In New Haven public health nursing for tuberculosis is provided through the Department of Health by the Visiting Nurse Association. Many nursing visits may be necessary before the patient and family understand the importance of carrying out the physician's orders and the nurse's instructions. The nurse can be of assistance in explaining the nature and value of Sanatorium treatment to the patient. While awaiting a vacancy, she can teach the importance and encourage the proper use of rest, diet, fresh air, and sunshine. The proper disposal of the sputum will prevent further infection of other members of the family. The Nurse can be of assistance to the physician in filing the application for Sanatorium care. She may arrange the financial responsibility, whether assumed by the family, the City Board of Charities, the Employees Tuberculosis Relief Association or the Xmas Seal Fund. |
