THE FAMILY COMMISSARY BEFORE HELP ARRIVED
Every family, whatever their mental, moral, physical, or financial status, realizes the necessity of paying their rent. Otherwise the alternative or inevitable dispossession may take place at some future time. Life insurance must be paid, or the policy lapses. Bills for gas and electricity must be met, lest they be deprived of the use of these commodities. Pride urges them to sacrifice wherever possible for the sake of a presentable appearance before their co-workers or neighbors. But the allowance of food -- alas! -- that can be reduced to a minimum that merely holds body and soul together. The family does not see any discomfort arising therefrom, except perhaps an immediate and temporary one which gradually disappears when the body has accustomed its elf to an inadequate diet. How meager is such a diet as ammunition to fight so powerful a foe! |
