THE ECONOMIC NEEDS OF THE FAMILY Diagnosis is the first step necessary in any plan for the physical rehabilitation of the patient. The physician must know the physical assets and liabilities before he can wisely plan the best course of treatment. A similar consideration of the financial assets and liabilities is also necessary before the wisest course can be pursued in obtaining an income sufficient to meet the minimum requirements for health and efficiency.
Above is a picture of a family budget when a nurse made her first contact. What chance have these children to build up a physical resistance, sufficient to overcome an infection, when the avverage weekly income has fallen short of meeting their needs by $8.95! In this family the principal wage earner was taking the cure in a sanitorium and it was found that the income had been reduced to $4 a week, to meet the required weekly expenses of $30.95! Surely this is an indication for immediate relief. |
