Education

Thank you for your interest in postdoctoral training in Nephrology and Hypertension at the Yale University School of Medicine.

Our training program is designed to prepare postdoctoral fellows for academic and/or clinical careers in the disciplines of nephrology and hypertension. We offer a combined clinical/research fellowship that is three (or more) years in duration and includes one year of full–time clinical training and two (or more) years of clinical or laboratory research. This is the pathway followed by the majority of Yale renal fellows. We also offer straight research fellowships for individuals who either desire no clinical nephrology training or received training at other institutions. A straight clinical fellowship that is two years in duration is available for individuals who intend to pursue clinical careers in nephrology and hypertension. Research training is supported by a training grant from the National Institutes of Health. Nephrology fellows may participate in the Investigative Medicine Ph.D. Program. Seventy percent of the graduates of our program currently hold full–time academic appointments.

Clinical training is provided in all facets of nephrology and hypertension, including end–stage renal disease (ESRD), in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Clinicians in the Section of Nephrology are nationally recognized in several areas of ESRD including hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Many are also involved in various types of clinical research, sit on editorial boards for several peer–reviewed medicine and nephrology journals, and participate in editing and writing chapters for renal textbooks. In addition, the Section of Nephrology is home to several outstanding clinician–teachers on the Yale faculty including three recipients of the Yale Medical Housestaff Teaching Award (Drs. Asghar Rastegar, Margaret Bia and Rex Mahnensmith ) and two recipients of the Francis Blake and Bohmfalk Awards as most outstanding clinical teachers in the School of Medicine (Drs. Bia and Rastegar).

Supervision of research training is provided by nationally and internationally recognized leaders in a variety of biomedical disciplines relevant to nephrology and hypertension, including physiology, cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, genetics, immunology, and pathology. Indeed, the Nephrology and Hypertension research training faculty at Yale includes six recipients of major research awards of the American Society of Nephrology (Homer Smith Award: Drs. Gerhard Giebisch, Emile Boulpaep, Peter Aronson, Steven Hebert and Richard Lifton; Young Investigator Award: Drs. Peter Aronson , Walter Boron, Michael Caplan and Fadi Lakkis).

These are exciting times to be entering the field of nephrology as both a clinical and research discipline. Clinically, the practice of nephrology combines the attributes of a procedural subspecialty involving consultation on patients who are often critically ill, with the features of a primary care field involving the long–term longitudinal care of ESRD patients. From a research perspective, recent advances in molecular genetics, physiology and immunology have provided new opportunities to address the mechanisms and treatment of renal disease and hypertension at a fundamental level. Numerous clinical questions remain unanswered and await the application of new technologies and ideas.

This page was designed to provide you with an overview of training in Nephrology and Hypertension at Yale. If you would like to learn more about our program, we urge you to submit an application and visit us. Faculty members and current fellows would welcome the chance to talk with you about the opportunities in Nephrology and Hypertension at Yale.
