Health Systems Research in Transitioning Economies
Dr. Ruger and colleagues have been interested in understanding how transitioning economies have dealt with issues of health systems needs and reforms. Studies have focused on:
South Korea
South Korea has transitioned from a lower income to an industrialized country in a relatively short period, and it expanded and developed its health system simultaneously to this transition. This led Dr. Ruger and colleagues to study several aspects of the country's health system:
Morocco
The issue of national health insurance in Morocco has been under ongoing debate, with two reforms to expand health insurance coverage in 2005
now being implemented. Dr. Ruger and colleagues from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation set out to analyze the impact of these reforms on
public and private sector roles in financing, provision and regulation of health services, as well as on reducing health financing gaps and expanding
health insurance coverage.
