Ethiopia Hospital Management Initiative
The Ethiopia Hospital Management Initiative (EHMI), launched in 2006, is a partnership
between the William Jefferson Clinton Foundation’s HIV/AIDS Initiative
(CHAI), the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health, and Yale University to establish
health management as a profession in Ethiopia.
The EHMI has been operational in Ethiopia for nearly two years. With the help of
Yale–Clinton Foundation Fellows who have been assigned to mentor hospital management
teams in selected hospitals throughout the country, the Blueprint for Hospital
Management in Ethiopia was created. Based on this Blueprint, a set of achievable standards
for hospital management has been developed, and a monitoring and evaluation
process is now being piloted to inform scale–up efforts countrywide.
The Master of Hospital Administration (MHA) Program
In March, 2008 EHMI launched the first Master of Hospital Administration (MHA) degree program in Ethiopia, and Africa as a whole.
The two–year executive development program aims to produce a cadre of capable and qualified CEOs who will improve the quality of
hospitals in Ethiopia. Housed within Jimma University, the MHA program will help build long–term capacity and professionalize hospital
management in Ethiopia.
