The Select Program in Public Health
A Five Year B.A.-B.S./ M.P.H. Program
Concentrations
Students in the B.A.-B.S./M.P.H. Program affiliate with one of seven Divisions or Programs at the School of Public Health. Their primary advisor comes from this Division/Program and their specific requirements within the five-year program are defined by this affiliation.
Biostatistics
The Biostatistics program trains students to develop and apply statistical principles and methods to problems in the health sciences, medicine, and biology. A graduate of the Biostatistics MPH program will be able to specify and produce valid study designs, perform database management and produce working tables and statistical summaries, generate new hypotheses, and properly interpret study results.
Chronic Disease Epidemiology
Epidemiology is the study of the frequency, distribution, and causes of disease in human populations. In the Chronic Disease Epidemiology Division, emphasis is placed on the fields of aging, cancer, cardiovascular disease, perinatal and reproductive epidemiology, and psychosocial epidemiology. Students will learn to describe the epidemiology of common chronic diseases, evaluate the scientific merit and feasibility of epidemiologic study designs, design and carry out epidemiologic studies, analyze epidemiologic data, and critique and evaluate epidemiologic evidence.
Social and Behavioral Sciences
The Social and Behavioral Sciences Program teaches students about the social, psychological, and behavioral factors that influence health, illness, and recovery. The impetus comes from the increasing recognition that behavioral, psychological, and social factors play a crucial role in epidemiology and public health, both as risk factors for adverse health outcomes and in strategies to promote health and prevent disease. The program’s areas of expertise are health promotion and disease prevention, social and behavioral interventions, and psychosocial epidemiology.
Environmental Health Sciences
The focus of the Environmental Health Sciences Division is to produce graduates who are able to identify environmental stressors, evaluate their hazard potential, assess human exposure, estimate the potential impact on human health, and establish the associated risk level for the population. Students may choose specialty tracks in environmental epidemiology, environmental policy, or risk assessment.
Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases
The Epidemiology program in Microbial Diseases produces graduates who understand the causes, detection, transport, transmission, pathogenesis, and defense of infectious diseases, and are prepared to apply this knowledge to prevent and control infections. Formal course work in field and laboratory studies emphasize a problem-solving approach, and provide students with experience in understanding how infectious agents are transported and transmitted; investigating an epidemic; conducting surveillance through collection, analysis, and synthesis of data; using laboratory methods to diagnose infectious diseases; and intervening in transmission cycles and disease progression.
Health Management
The mission of the Health Management Program is to educate outstanding decision makers who can influence and direct the delivery of health care through their leadership of organizations committed to enhancing the quality, accessibility, and cost effectiveness of health care services. Through academic and practical experiences, students are prepared for management careers in not-for-profit, for-profit, and public health care settings. The program is unique in that it combines courses at the School of Public Health with courses at the Yale School of Management (SOM).Please note: Students in the Health Management program must take required courses in a specific sequence. Registration for required SOM courses will begin during the senior year at Yale College.
Health Policy
The program in Health Policy combines an integrated two-year sequence of policy courses with student choice about substantive concentration. The four-class core policy sequence is broadly interdisciplinary, but draws most heavily on models from political economics and political science. The other course requirements in the policy sequence are designed to provide students with the range of analytic tools and empirical methods. This training allows students to analyze public problems in a rigorous manner, addressing those problems from a broad conceptual perspective and with a modicum of creative thought. |
