School Climate Survey

The school climate surveys that we have developed measure concepts such as achievement motivation and academic focus as well as factors that tap into the social climate of the school. The survey respondents are asked to think about consistent patterns in their current school relationships before answering the questions. The report groups the questions together under broad categories that we refer to as 'variables.' These categories enable you to frame questions about your school climate, such as "What does it mean for our school that the students perceive the school as having strong Order and Discipline but average Student-Teacher Relations?"

Q. What surveys do you have available for purchase?
A. We have School Climate Surveys (four versions: Elementary/Middle School Student, High School Student, Parent, and Staff), and the School Implementation Questionnaire--Abbreviated (SIQA)

Q.
How do I know which surveys I should use, and when I should administer them?
A. The SIQA measures the implementation of the Comer Process as viewed by staff and team members. We recommend administering the SIQA in the first year of implementation, and every two years thereafter. Information from the first year will be used to describe the extent to which elements of the Comer Process are already present in your school.

We recommend that the student, parent and staff versions of the School Climate Survey be administered in the first year of implementing the Comer Process, and every two years thereafter. The survey is appropriate for Grade 3 and above, and may be administered to (1) all students, (2) a random sample of students, or (3) a cluster sample of students.

Some schools may decide to distribute the surveys every year for four to five years, but all plans for survey distribution should be developed in collaboration with your SDP Implementation Coordinator.

Q. Who should receive the SIQA?

A. ALL staff members, whether professional or technical, clerical or custodial, ALL team members (SPMT, Parent Team, Student Staff Support Team), and parents who are routinely in the school (usually about 10-20).

Q.
What is the cost of the surveys? Does it include data entry and reports?
A. Please examine the prices on each order form. The cost of the surveys does not include data entry or reports. One report is prepared for each type of survey; for example, one report for the SIQA, and one report for each version of the school climate survey. A minimum of 15 completed surveys (of any particular version) is required for a report.

Q. How do we order the surveys?
A. Prepare your order using the order form; if you have any questions, contact Emily Solivan in our office emily.solivan@yale.edu; 203.737.4003. Have your Purchasing Department prepare a Purchase Order to cover the order. Please attach the Purchase Order (not the Purchase Requisition) to your order form. To expedite shipment, you may fax these documents to us in advance. No surveys will be shipped until payment or a hard copy of the Purchase Order has been received.

Q.
When will the surveys be shipped?

A. Under normal circumstances, surveys will be shipped within three to five days of receipt of your Purchase Order. All orders will be shipped by UPS ground unless otherwise requested; additional shipping charges will apply for overnight shipment.

Q.
When will we be billed? How should we pay for the surveys and services?

A. We will prepare an invoice upon receipt of your Purchase Order. Payment instructions appear on the invoice.

Q.
Are instructions provided on how to administer the surveys?
A. An instruction card with guidelines on how to administer the student surveys is included with every shipment. Parent surveys may be mailed, sent home with students or distributed at meetings, with clear instructions provided on how they should be returned to the school. Staff surveys may be put in mailboxes or distributed at meetings. Care should be taken to keep the identity of everyone completing the survey either anonymous or confidential.

Q. To whom should we send the completed surveys?
A. Inside each survey shipment is a return label and instruction sheet, indicating where the surveys should be shipped for data entry. They should NOT be returned to our office. The completed surveys should be mailed in one shipment to: Sheila Kearney, Saztec International, 29 Naek Road, Vernon, CT 06066.

Q.
How long will it take for us to get the reports?
A. Assuming that we have received your payment for services, you should expect the report(s) within 1½ to 2 months from the time you ship the completed forms out for data entry. If you need the reports sooner, you must contact our office to make special arrangements for more rapid processing.

Q.
Is help available for interpreting the results of the surveys?
A. You may wish to discuss this with your designated SDP Implementation Coordinator, or with Dr. Christine Emmons, Director of Program Evaluation. Dr. Emmons can be reached at 203.737.4004, or by e-mail, christine.emmons@yale.edu.
