Referral to Services

Special Concerns

Infoline is a confidential, free telephone referral service. Dial 2-1-1 and they will help you to find appropriate services for the child or family that you know needs help. Infoline is an integrated system of help via the telephone - a single source for information about community services, referrals to human services, and crisis intervention. It is accessed toll-free from anywhere in Connecticut by simply dialing 2-1-1. It operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Multilingual caseworkers and TDD access is available. 2-1-1 connects you to agencies and organizations near you that can make a difference. You can also access information online at www.infoline.org.

The Yale Consultation Center's RED BOOK provides referral information to a wide range of family services in the Greater New Haven community.

The Youth Development Training and Resource Center (YDTRC) located at The Consultation Center in New Haven has a generous collection of resource links to Youth-Serving Community Networks.

If your child is under 3 years old and you are worried about how she is developing call Birth to Three at 1-800-505-7000 regarding your right to a FREE evaluation. If you are wondering if your child is developing normally, ask your doctor about milestones you child should be achieving.

If your child is over 3 years old and you are worried about how he is learning and developing, your local school district will provide you with a FREE evaluation. Call the Pupil Personnel Office for your town or city (listed in the Blue pages of the phone book) or contact SERC ChildFind/Parent Assistance Line at 1-800-842-8678. To learn more about appropriate expectations for your child, look at ages and stages from the National Network for Child Care and ask your doctor.

The Yale Child Study Center (785-2513) provides evaluations of children on a sliding fee scale. Call 785-2513

The Yale Center for Children with Special Health Care Needs online! We are a statewide network of professionals partnering with families of children with special health care needs. On our site you will find information about the Yale Center programs, how to apply, application forms, frequently asked questions, a contact form and other useful information.

The Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital in the community provides the following services in support of community and patient needs:

Health care - including a program for families called Nurturing Families which is home visitation program that helps support first-time parents to meet the challenges of parenthood, create a safe environment for their child and learn positive parenting skills. The Connecticut Parent Advocacy Center (CPAC) 1-800-445-2722 is a statewide nonprofit organization that offers information and support to families of children with any disability or chronic illness, age birth through 21. They have a free newsletter and support network for parents.

We're Special Too! is a free sibling support program for brothers and sisters of children with special needs, such as hospitalization, handicapping conditions, chronic or terminal illness. Sponsored by the Friends of the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and coordinated by a Certified Child Life Specialist, this program encourages self-expression and develops trust in a fun, creative environment. Grandparents

GRANDPARENTS AS PARENTS SUPPORT PROGRAM (GAPS): The State of Connecticut Department of Social Services Elderly Services Division, developed this statewide program to provide assistance in establishing grandparent support groups for grandparents and relatives raising children. The Grandparents As Parents Support Program (GAPS), is designed to encourage and promote the creation of services for relatives who have taken on the responsibility of parenting. GAPS support groups were started in all five regions of the state under the auspices of the Brookdale Foundation Group’s national program Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP).

Grandparents raising Grandchildren: The Consultation Center's Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support group meets on the third Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 830 Whitney Avenue, New Haven. Contact: Barbara Abraham or Lisa Winters at 789-7645. The Consultation Center has a Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Newsletter called GrandNews which can be found online in pdf format or contact the Center to get on the mailing list.

The Village Grandparents Support Group meetings at the Varick Family Life Center, 246 Dixwell Avenue, on the third Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.. Contact: Doris Little 407-3172

New Haven Board of Education Social Development Department, Grandparents on the Move Program, group meets each month on the second Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the East Rock Magnet School. Contact: Carolyn Jackson 946-7444.

Wexler School Family Resource Center Grandparents group meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Varick Family Life Center, 246 Dixwell Avenue. Contact: Aisha Black or Hazel Johnson 946-6921.

Hamden Kids sponsored by Hamden School Readiness Council whose mission is to work with families and the communities to plan, coordinate, and improve services for all children. National Education Association provides Parent's guides to homework, math, science and achievement. NEA's popular guides for parents, available in English and Spanish, cover a variety of topics and offer tips and advice to help you help your child succeed.

Reading Rockets is a national multimedia project offering information and resources on how young kids learn to read, why so many struggle, and how caring adults can help. They provide strategies to help kids who struggle, techniques for teaching effectively, help find great Kids' Books & Authors, and much more. Reading is Fundamental, RIF, is the nation’s largest non-profit literacy organization. Its site includes information about its vide training program for teachers and child care professionals, Gateways to Early Literacy; family activity calendars, and other resources for educators and parents.

West Haven Public School Family Resource Center provides an array of services to promote and support healthy family development. We work together with families to support growth and development of all family members.

TEAM manages over a dozen programs that seek to improve the lives of economically vulnerable families. With its central office in Derby, the agency is an integral part of the regional socialsafety net. TEAM provides both direct service and referrals to other area agencies.
